Super Eagles assistant coach Segun Ogunmodede has announced the completion of his UEFA B Coaching License via a post on X. Widely regarded as one of the finest young coaches in the country, the achievement goes a long way in bolstering his credentials as a coach.
The former Remo Stars FC coach completed his programme at Rangers Football Club in Scotland, alongside Paul Offor of Awka United. This milestone has been positively received amid calls from stakeholders for more local coaches to upgrade their credentials with a view to ultimately improving the quality of the Nigerian Premier League.
Ogunmodede also embodied this view in his post, saying, “As an advocate of football coaching education, I am humbly pleased to announce my successful completion and official recognition as a UEFA B Licensed coach… Together we can be better.”
What the License Means
The UEFA B coaching license is highly regarded globally, and it equips holders with modern training techniques, in-depth tactical knowledge, and robust player development abilities. It also makes holders eligible to be a coach at any club in Europe, with varying degrees of limitations. A holder can only be a head coach at an amateur club, an under-15 -19 coach at any club, or be an assistant coach at any club in the lower tiers of any league.
More importantly, the UEFA B License now enables the holder to secure a UEFA A License and ultimately, a Pro License. The license creates a path to a senior coaching role on a global level.
Career History
Ogunmodede’s career started in 2016 after joining Remo Stars as an assistant coach. In a span of five years in the role, he helped them stabilize in the Nigerian Premier League and developed a reputation for nurturing young talent. In 2021, he left Remo Stars to become a backroom staff member under Rui Ferreira at Firenze in Portugal’s Liga 2, gaining valuable experience in the process. In 2022, he returned to Remo Stars to be their head coach.
In the 2023/2024 season, he guided Remo Stars to a second-place finish in the Nigerian Premier League, securing a spot in the CAF Champions League. Earlier that year, he was invited to work with former Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro as an assistant. Since then, he has spent his time between his role as Remo Stars’ head coach and the Nigerian national team.
The following season, he guided the team to their first-ever NPFL trophy, securing a top spot finish, buttressing his reputation as a tactical mastermind and coach who prioritizes young talent.
2025, however, came with its own problems. Remo stars lost key players due to transfers, financial pressures, and poor squad planning by management. This hurt team performances and subsequently led to a breakdown in the relationship between the club and Ogunmodede. A rough start to the season saw them in 17th place after 8 matches. Coupled with heavy losses against Mamelodi Sundowns and their eventual exit from the CAF Champions League, Ogunmodede eventually resigned as head coach at Remo Stars.
A Future To Look Forward To
His engagement with the Super Eagles has remained intact. With his new qualification, the scope of what he can offer the team will only increase as he continues to assist current Nigerian head coach Eric Chelle. Boasting a stellar reputation, it goes without saying that Ogunmodede could become a potential Super Eagle head coach in the future. Should he decide to stick with the Super Eagles or try his hand at another club, the fact remains that Nigeria needs more coaches with such ambition.
