Top 10 Stylish African Footballers And What Their Fashion Says About Who They Are

Top 10 Stylish African Footballers And What Their Fashion Says About Who They Are

Africa has been blessed with an abundance of talent and style. The continent’s fashion is eclectically rooted in its deep culture and rich history. As many of its football stars have gone on to conquer the world, they have also brought their unique appeal to the fashion industry. In no particular order, Box 18 Africa examines the top 10 stylish African footballers right now and their fashion outlook below –

1. Achraf Hakimi

Achraf Hakimi

Achraf Hakimi doesn’t just wear clothes, he makes statements. Born to immigrant Moroccan parents who migrated to Spain, Hakimi was shaped by the suburbs of Getafe to be the face of international brands today. From humble beginnings with labouring parents to sitting front row at the biggest fashion shows globally without looking out of place, Achraf Hakimi has come a long way.

When he is not shutting down the pitch to win the Champions League, you can find Hakimi turning up for Marni, Balmain, Diesel, Sacai, Willy Chavarria, and Casablanca. On other days, he’s casually impressing in covers for Vogue Arabia, GQ, L’Officiel, or showing up at major Art Exhibitions like the Art Basel. Effortless and precise not only in his style but also in his appearances, Hakimi speaks the fashion language fluently.

“Elegant, classic, and comfortable”, three words Hakimi uses to describe his aesthetic. However simple they may sound, they represent the hallmark of a footballer who deeply knows himself and is grounded in his sense of style. This style is inspired by his unique heritage, a combination of Moroccan ancestry, Spanish upbringing, and Parisian growth, and it carries into his fashion choices. His collaboration with Sports Brand Under Armour is another testament to Hakimi’s unique independent disposition. In a Nike-dominated sports space, the youth-themed redirection of Under Armour fits perfectly with Hakimi’s growth and style.

Whether he’s sporting Dior during his team’s tunnel walk, showing up at a Sacai show in avant-garde drip, or attending Balmain’s gala in a sharp suit, Hakimi doesn’t dress to impress fashion heads but to express himself. The face of several luxurious campaigns, Hakimi’s style embodies a man who knows exactly who he is and carries his heritage with pride.

2. Victor Osimehn

Victor Osimehn

Victor Osimehn’s style is perhaps the most emotionally charged on this list. From his humble beginnings in the slums of Olusosun in Lagos, where he scavenged for boots and jerseys and sold sachets of water to survive, to his iconic rise and dominance in Europe, Osimehn’s story is football folklore.

His style tells his story. A 2021 collision in Napoli’s match against Inter Milan saw him fracture his cheekbone and eye socket, necessitating his wearing his now infamous carbon fibre mask for protection. Even after undergoing surgery that saw a metal plate and screws inserted into his face and after healing, Osimehn has continued to wear the mask as continuous protection and a bold fashion statement, now a part of his identity.

The striker has leaned into a super-hero persona at Glatsaray, facilitated by his mask and image. His recent injury has seen him sport a custom high-tech and fashionable carbon fibre arm brace after fracturing his forearm. A custom face mask and futuristic arm brace, utility vests, technical fabrics, boots, high-end accessories, and designer street wear, Victor Osimehn’s style embodies his psychological strength, emotional resilience, and physical power. A royal and bold existence is evident even in his car garage.

In his illustrious career, Victor Osimehn has been through it all. Career-threatening injuries, complex contract negotiations, public criticism, fan cult worship, iconic performances and trophies, and an industry that has at various times both celebrated and commodified him. All things considered, the striker has risen through personal excellence and grit to become one of the most feared strikers on the planet. Through all of it, he has dressed as he has played, with explosive joy, irreducible confidence, and an absolute refusal to be diminished.

3. Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah

The Egyptian King, Mohamed Salah, has been at the pinnacle of football for almost a decade. Controlled, purposeful, but devastatingly effective, his fashion style reflects the way he approaches the game. Growing up, Salah would take gruelling four-hour bus rides from his home in Nagrig to Cairo to train. Often taking 3 -4 buses either way and spending 10 – 15 hours per day on the trip, this continued for four years, instilling a discipline still visible today.

Whether he’s draped in a Gucci coat and retro Adidas on his global GQ cover or switching outfits on the set of Gucci and Adidas’ collaboration, his image is as carefully constructed as his game on the pitch. Reeking of controlled confidence, Mohamed Salah dresses like he doesn’t need to announce himself. Even when he’s wearing Prada or Louis Vuitton, his image projects someone comfortable in his skin rather than dressing to court attention.

During his 2022 GQ conversation, he spoke candidly about self-knowledge: “The best thing you could have is a serious conversation with yourself. Just get a coffee and sit and ask yourself what you want.” It is the kind of self-awareness that has made Salah an African and Premier League legend, and it extends to his style and appearance. Even his luxury watches are carefully collected and are subtle in their extravagance. A restraint that is more powerful than any flashy outlook can give.

On a deeper level, Salah’s fashion style is synonymous with his identity as an Egyptian Muslim navigating global celebrity status. He consistently chooses understated pieces that communicate cultural respect and personal discipline, becoming an extension of his values and aligning with his philanthropic work and community focus. At the end of the day, his authenticity shines through, and fans globally see him as a blueprint for dignified modern menswear.

4. Riyad Mahrez

Riyadh Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez’s story is one of sheer resilience and persistent talent. Growing up in the working-class suburbs of Clichy, Paris, where opportunities are hard to come by, he lost his dad at 15. His dreams of being a footballer were also under constant threat as he was often overlooked for being too slender. Against all odds, his talent with the ball shone through, rising through the ranks at. Quimper, then Le Havre, before securing a move to Leicester City.

After Leicester’s underdog Premier League-winning campaign, Mahrez was on his way to Manchester City and an iconic career. His fashion is an expression of his triumph in his career; elegant, deliberate, and quietly assured. The winger sports a grooming that’s meticulous and embodies an aesthetic that radiates a confidence that style isn’t about labels but carriage.

Mahrez’s personality doesn’t stop at his outfits but carries into his life as well. His grand wedding at Lake Como to Taylor Ward easily makes them one of the most stylish couples in football. His endorsement deals also complement his persona; Nike, Algerian telecommunications firm Djezzy, and pharmaceutical brand Laboratories Venus Sapeco, all speak to a man who takes his image seriously.

Algeria’s captain, on the pitch, Mahrez is a silent leader who leads by example. Famous for his quiet lifestyle, his wardrobe is the only stage he allows the world in. Even at the pinnacle of his fame, Mahrez dresses with the care and discipline of a person who remembers the importance of elegance.

5. Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi represents the ultimate diasporan hybrid. Born in Lagos but raised in London, his style is a perfect split between the African flair of his uncle, Jay-Jay Okocha, and the North London streetwear culture he grew up in. He reflects the philosophy of the modern Nigerian-Brit, who is comfortable in both worlds. One day, he is in a traditional Nigerian Agbada at a family event; the next, he is in a limited-edition streetwear collaboration for a London gallery opening.

“I like to entertain; be it music, football, friends,” Iwobi says in an interview with CLASH Magazine, perfectly capturing his creative persona that has constantly wowed fans globally. IH NOM UH NIT, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Amiri, Christian Dior, Kapital, Purple Brand are just some of the brands Iwobi gravitates towards. From luxury heritage houses to cult streetwear labels that the fashion press are new to, appearing at the London and Paris fashion week, and intimate conversations with fashion CEOs, for Iwobi fashion is closer to art than a wardrobe.

His media venture, “Project 17,” is an extension of the footballer and his creativity. In 2024, he launched his music career under the moniker “17,” becoming one of the few active footballers to commit to a music career while in their prime. On his 2026 project, “More To Life”, the footballer blends influences from London’s music scene with Afrobeats, accompanied by striking artwork. The artwork features a black-and-white image of the Fulham star in a hooded sweatshirt and beanie alongside childhood photos from 1998, 2004, and 2010. The result is a fashion statement.

Beneath Iwobi’s energetic and free-spirited nature is a profound pride in his Nigerian heritage that shapes not just his football but his identity. He chose Nigeria over England after attending U-23 trials and reconnecting with his roots, a key part of his persona to date. The footballer has encouraged his colleagues to embrace all aspects of their personality outside football. This is the hallmark of a man who has chosen to live to the fullest; on the pitch, in the studio, on the runway, and everywhere in between.

6. Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane is one of Africa’s greatest players ever. The current Al-Nassr forward has spent his career impressing on some of the biggest stages in football and is heavily decorated for it. However, he has not strayed from a simplistic life. Growing up in the remote village of Bambali, Senegal, Mane’s childhood was shaped by communal struggle and deep religious faith. Mane’s simple aesthetic is an expression of his background and philosophy on life.

At the 2022 Ballon d’Or ceremony, Mane shocked the world by showing up in an impeccably fitted and boldly cultural Senegalese kaftan. At football’s biggest award ceremony and in a room full of men in suits, tuxedos, and prescribed formality, Senegal’s biggest star had once again proudly carried his culture at the forefront of his presence. It was not a novelty or a gimmick but a polite statement that African excellence doesn’t need to conform to European approval.

Mane is popular for being extremely frugal with his personal expenses, preferring to channel his wealth back to his community. Mane’s fashion style, while being clean and catchy, is usually simple and comfortable, the hallmark of a man who would rather help others than stack a designer wardrobe.  In a footballing world where young Africans are often pressured to acquire and display, Mané’s deliberate simplicity is itself a style statement.

On that fateful night at the Balon D’Or ceremony, Mane won the inaugural Socrates award in recognition of his massive humanitarian work in Senegal, where he has built a school, hospital, mosque, and provides monthly stipends to families. His presence and style were a symbol of hope to millions of Africans that the world can celebrate, irrespective of one’s background. Mane’s style is not about fashion at all, but about identity, values, and the kind of deep cultural rootedness that no amount of global fame can dissolve.

7. Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech has always been a maverick who doesn’t fit into conventional ideals. Too unpredictable for the average coach, too individually brilliant for the first team football that always struggled to harness his talent. Where other stars have trademark styles, Ziyech seems to pick his wardrobe by instinct, the ultimate display of a unique individual.

Nicknamed “The Wizard” for his antics on the pitch and high football intelligence, his qualities extend to his fashion style. Reeking of an eclectic persona, Ziyech often combines pieces that generally shouldn’t work together, but somehow they always do. Ziyech dresses, essentially, the way he plays: with imagination, flair, and a cheerful disregard for the expected.

Ziyech’s rise to fame was a long road. The youngest of nine children, his parents migrated to the Netherlands in search of a better life. He lost his father at the age of 10, and their mother had to fend for the family, but despite a background fraught with challenges and juvenile delinquency, his footballing dream paid off against all odds.

Having fought for everything in his career, Ziyech’s defiant spirit and refusal to be constrained are evident in his style. Whether he is decked in diamond stones and casual designer streetwear or he is looking dapper in a custom-made suit, Ziyech is bold and sure of himself. This is the man who, at the height of his Chelsea years, publicly criticised the Dutch national team setup that had overlooked him, and chose instead to represent Morocco with the kind of defiant pride that made him a national hero. His style is no different; proud and assured.

8. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

In the dying minutes of Arsenal’s Europa League comeback against Rennes in 2018/19, Aubameyang scored twice and provided an assist in a 3-0 win after Arsenal had lost the first leg 3-1. Having scored the decisive goal, the Gabonese forward retrieved a black panther mask and pulled off one of the most iconic celebrations alongside 60,000 fans. He had placed the bag there at least two home matches prior in anticipation of such a scenario, and the meticulous preparation tells you all you need to know about him.

The striker has perhaps the most iconic superhero imagery in the sport. From Spider-Man at Saint Etienne, Batman at Dortmund, and Black Panther at Arsenal, his imagery reveals his constant planning and painstaking attention to how he is perceived. He explained his choice of the Black Panther mask with characteristic directness: “I needed the mask to represent me. In Africa, in Gabon, we call the national team the Black Panthers, so it represents me. That’s it. What seemed like a superhero mask unveiled his understanding of global popular culture, African pride, and his creativity as a person.

Not just glitz and glamour, Aubameyang often has a deeper meaning to his escapades. The striker has defended his masked celebrations by pointing out that he also wears them for young football fans worldwide as a source of acknowledgement and joy for children. When he dyed “Marina” into his hair and went ahead to score twice for Arsenal, it was a tribute to his grandmother, who had “taught him so much”. With Aubameyang, what seems like flamboyance often reveals a deeper thoughtfulness and expression from the footballer.

Aubameyang is, however, still a man of himself and indulges when he wants to. His fleet of luxury cars features spectacular custom wraps in gold, pearlescent chrome, marble, and psychedelic silver. His fashion style does not stray far from his bold outlook, a mixture of striking colors and statement pieces, complemented by exotic jewelry. Aubameyang is stylish, radical, thoughtful, and 100% himself.

9. Wilfried Zaha

In some quarters, Wilfried Zaha is believed to be one of the most underrated players to grace the Premier League. Throughout his eventful football career so far, Zaha has dressed with a magnificence that sits above what pundits and critics think. For a decade, his style has projected the visual image of someone who refuses to be diminished.

His Ivorian identity is central to his fashion, even when the references are abstract. Ivory Coast has one of West Africa’s most vibrant fashion cultures, and Zaha’s appetite for colour, pattern, and presence draws from that inspiration even when he wears contemporary outfits. While he might not be the most “African” in his dressing, he carries it in his style, color combinations, and eye-catching ensembles.

A winger of extraordinary talent, Zaha’s shocking choice to represent the Ivory Coast over England is as bold as his aesthetic. Whether in fur-trimmed outerwear, dramatic knitwear, or luxurious suits in unexpected cuts, Zaha favors rich colors and statement pieces that make an unmistakable impression. Confidently personal and dramatically adventurous, the Ivorian winger elicits a theatrical quality to his fashion that oozes creativity and originality.

10. Kalidou Koulibaly

Kalidou Koulibaly is among the most physically imposing men in football, and yet his fashion continues to defy expectations. Where one might anticipate aggression, the defender consistently presents a fashion package that is way more refined. With measured tailoring, neutral palettes and considered pops of colour, Koulibaly presents the kind of effortless sophistication that shows a man who is at ease with his own presence.

Born and bred in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, France, to Senegalese parents, Koulibaly has spent his career navigating the complexity of being an imposing African in European football. He has had to overcome racial targeting and unfair scrutiny to be one of the most respected and admired defenders in the sport. His response to adversity has always been principled, measured, and dignified. This leadership by example has influenced his Senegalese captaincy and public statements, and it shows in his fashion and appearance.

He became one of the most beloved figures in his years at Napoli while simultaneously absorbing Italian fashion and style. Naples is a city that takes fashion seriously, and it is impossible to spend a decade in it without absorbing some of its influence. Koulibaly absorbed the Naples effect while combining it with his Senegalese heritage to evoke a look that is polished and classy.

His move to Chelsea and subsequently Al-Hilal introduced him to other fashion contexts, but his fundamental aesthetic has remained constant. What Koulibaly’s wardrobe communicates is the same thing his presence as a leader communicates: true authority is embodied, not performed. To dress like Kalidou Koulibaly is to understand that elegance, in the end, is a form of discipline and carriage.
